Featured Quilt - Third Place Modern Traditionalism at QuiltCon 2023

Spin Cycle by Maria Shell won Third Place in the Modern Traditionalism category at QuiltCon 2023. Similar in design to Maria's other Modern quilts, this one puts a new "spin" on the the design in her eyes. She says, "Spin Cycle is an evolution of several of my favorite quilt piecing topics - triangles, the grid, and the quarter log cabin block. I kept the units consistent, but I changed the scale within the same space which created some interesting results. This quilt reminds me of propellers, twirlers, pinwheels whirligigs, and the spin cycle of a washing machine."

You can learn how Maria makes her improvisational designs right here at The Quilt Show by watching her in

The Quilt Show Puzzle: A Hide-and-Seek Mouse

"I Spy A Mouse" by Cristina Arcenegui Bono

Based on another illustration by Johanna Basford from her coloring book, Enchanted Forest, I Spy A Mouse is named for all the creatures that are hidden throughout, including one mouse. Cristina quilted the mouse itself in a very light thread so that people would have a difficult time finding it. That way when people do find it, Cristina takes great joy in their accomplishment.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Stories From The Past

"Dear Dorothy" by Carole Lyles Shaw

Dear Dorothy is one of Carole's art quilts that she makes on occasion between her more Modern ones. A few years back when her Aunt Dorothy and her husband passed, Carole was cleaning out their house and found a tiny book from 1938 that on each page had different prayers and well wishes from girls in Dorothy's Catholic High School class that began with "Dear Dorothy". Carole fell in love with the book and photographed some of the pages and transferred them to fabric, which then became the inspiration for this quilt.
