Featured Quilt - Third Place Modern Traditionalism at QuiltCon
2023
Spin Cycle by Maria Shell won Third Place in the Modern Traditionalism category at QuiltCon 2023. Similar in design to Maria's other Modern quilts, this one puts a new "spin" on the the design in her eyes. She says, "Spin Cycle is an evolution of several of my favorite quilt piecing topics - triangles, the grid, and the quarter log cabin block. I kept the units consistent, but I changed the scale within the same space which created some interesting results. This quilt reminds me of propellers, twirlers, pinwheels whirligigs, and the spin cycle of a washing machine."
You can learn how Maria makes her improvisational designs right here at The Quilt Show by watching her in How to Do Improvisational Patchwork with Maria Shell.

Match The Quilter With Their Quilt
For Game Day this International Quilting Weekend, we've devised a couple
of quizzes for you. In each one you will be trying to match a picture of a quilt to the quilter who made it. After completing the first one, try your hand at the second if you want a bit more of a challenge.

"Dear Dorothy" by Carole Lyles Shaw
Dear Dorothy is one of Carole's art quilts that she makes on occasion between her more Modern ones. A few years back when her Aunt Dorothy and her husband passed, Carole was cleaning out their house and found a tiny book from 1938 that on each page had different prayers and well wishes from girls in Dorothy's Catholic High School class that began with "Dear Dorothy". Carole fell in love with the book and photographed some of the pages and transferred them to fabric, which then became the inspiration for this quilt.
See more of Carole's quilts in Learn How to Work in a Series and an Afro-Modern Fractured Disappearing 9-Patch with Carole Lyles Shaw.

Bring Your Quilting To Colorful Life
A lot of people still see quilting as the black and white concept of
just a needle, thread, and a few blocks. But it has evolved into so much more. With Modern quilting, miniature quilting, art quilting, and beyond, what you as a quilter can do now is limitless. And guess what? The Quilt Show has teachers, shows, and classes covering all those topics. So ready your favorite colors (even black and white) and start your journey over the rainbow right here at TQS!
