Featured Quilt - Best Stationary Machine Workmanship Award at AQS QuiltWeek Daytona 2024

This was one of Ricky's favorite quilts when he first spotted it at the 2023 Houston International Quilt Festival, and now it's won a major award. Floral Symphony No. 2, created by Mariya Waters of Victoria, Australia, won Best Stationary Machine Workmanship at AQS QuiltWeek Daytona 2024

She writes, "This quilt has its roots in my extensive collection of Eastern European embroidery flower shapes. It was begun in 2016 and totally remade in 2020-2023 following an issue with a longarm quilter. This time, I quilted it myself in sections using the quilt-as-you-go method. The appliqué is my whole-unit method, which meant I could recover the appliqué shapes from the original quilt. All the flowers were cut from ombre batiks."

Cathy Perlmutter Arrives In a Brand New Show!

See Her Create In a Variety of Diverse Styles

Cathy Perlmutter’s non-fussy quilts are a joyful blend of colorful artsy improv, topped with a bit of quirky humor. Early dreams of being an art major were shattered when she realized she simply didn’t have the talent it took to become one, so being a journalism major was the better choice. An unexpected stop while on vacation in 1991 exposed her to the world of quilting and the artist within knew she had found her place. Thirty years later, she says she still can’t sew a straight line, but loves designing fun and non-fussy quilts. Learn how to build your own colorful cityscape out of fabric, foundation piece improv Log Cabin triangles, and stitch Kippah gifts for your friends and family.

Watch Cathy in Improv Log Cabin Triangle Piecing, Cityscapes, and Judaic Quilting with Cathy Perlmutter, which debuts today!

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Peppy Penguins At Play

"Penguin Playground" by Sue Sherman

When Sue sees Penguin Playground she just thinks of play. To her, penguins jumping around on an iceberg is one of the most playful things she's ever seen. This quilt was the first time that Sue made a really big quilt with animals. It is comprised of lots of different animals that she photographed at different times in different places and placed together on one iceberg, trying to capture all of their expressions. Some of the photos used were of actual groupings of penguins that were together so you can see them interacting with one another.
