Featured Quilt - 1st Place Windham Fabrics Artisan Cotton Fabric Challenge at QuiltCon 2024

Overprint by Betsy Vinegrad won 1st Place in the Windham Fabrics Artisan Cotton Fabric Challenge (Sponsored by Windham Fabrics) at QuiltCon 2024. The quilts in this challenge had to use at least 3 of the 6 challenge fabrics chosen by featured artist Jacquie Gering.

Betsy writes of her quilt, "Overprinting is when a color is printed directly over another causing a mix of those colors. When I received the challenge fabrics, I knew I would make something that had a transparency effect, like overprinting. Windham Artisan Cottons are a cross-weave fabric, meaning the warp and weft yarns are different colors. Imagine that apple green-chartreuse is printed on top of aqua-white first, then the turquoise-copper and grape-dark pink circles are printed on top. Where the circles overlap the green, they become darker, in those sections I used the darker aqua-blue and red-royal. The crosshatch quilting, stitched with green in one direction and light aqua in the other, mimics the warp and weft in the fabric. "Overprint" was inspired by Jenny Haynes' "Twice Cut Drunkard's Path" technique, and I used her 14" Drunkard's Path Template Set to cut the shapes @pappersaxsten. It was machine pieced and quilted on a stationary machine."

Textile Talks: Fiber Artists vs Artificial Intelligence - What We Know That It Doesn’t

What do Fiber Art and Artificial Intelligence have in common?

Presented by Surface Design Association, "What do fiber art and Artificial Intelligence have in common? More than many people—including most computer scientists—realize. String, the earliest fiber technology, is 50,000 years old, and fiber has informed myriad technologies since, especially digital computing. Looking toward our digital future, we will use case studies of our own experiences, primarily in quilting and crochet, to address the potentials and limitations of the impact of Generative AI with large language models (LLMs) on fiber arts design and production."

The Quilt Show Puzzle: A Different Home for Penguins

"Sanctuary?" by Sue Sherman

Sanctuary? is Sue's imagination of a future in which there's no snow left on Antarctica and it's too warm for penguins to reproduce. So an artificial environment has had to be created for a penguin rookery. The environment itself is a geodesic dome in which the penguins live inside, powered by a coal-fired furnace that spews out smoke that generates electricity to power an air-conditioner that cools the penguins. Under the dome, there are about 100 different uniquely designed penguins each individually dye-painted with their own distinct details in the quilting. The quilt itself is primarily dye-painted, with some metallic labels on the equipment, and the rocks and smoke feature fabric-painted touch-ups.
