Featured Quilt - Best Original Modern Design at QuiltCon 2024
Candy Pop by Kelly Spell won Best Original Modern Design (Sponsored by eQuilter.com) at QuiltCon 2024. The quilt was quite the undertaking for Kelly, as she says, "This is probably the most ambitious quilt I’ve ever made. I dyed and printed all of the fabric, and assembly included an 18-foot-long serpentine swirl. That single piece of fabric winds its way up, down, and around 12 circles. The quilt represents a lot of growth in my artistic practice, and I can’t wait for it to be out in the world."
As for the design aesthetic of Candy Pop, Kelly says, "Pink and maroon candies dance in a sea of red. I made this quilt to push my design and piecing capabilities into new territory. All of the fabric is hand-dyed or hand-printed. Construction of the quilt top required techniques similar to that of a double wedding ring motif."

She Made Her First Quilt the Day She Retired
Canadian quilt artist and passionate environmentalist Sue Sherman had an all consuming day job as an engineer that left no time for the art she wanted to make, until her retirement in April of 2017. She promptly made her first quilt the day she retired. In 2018, a class with Hollis Chatelain gave her the understanding and confidence to create her own animal based art quilts that have garnered impressive wins both nationally and internationally.
See Sue's quilts and learn from her, and Tracy Mooney, by watching How to Paint with Thickened Dyes and Use Thread Painting with Sue Sherman | The Potato Chip Block with Tracy Mooney.

Get Help with Small Tool Organization
Erika Mulvenna at WeAllSew writes, "You know what they say about necessity and invention, right? I found myself looking for something to help organize a pair of thread snips, needles and pins for small hand sewing tasks. Something like my larger scissors case, but smaller and easier to carry. I made a few changes to the original scissors case to create this mini version with needle minder and a handy side pocket. Not only is it super cute, but it’s super quick to make (and makes a great gift for friends that sew!)."
