Featured Quilt - A Great "Green" Quilt

If you've ever seen a Pat Durbin quilt, you know that she loves taking inspiration from nature. From the tallest trees to the smallest plants, her quilts celebrate the growing and green world around us. Her quilt featured in the Small Wall Quilts - Stationary Machine Quilted category at AQS QuiltWeek Paducah 2024, aptly titled Garden Green, is no different. Depicting a lush image of nature derived from her own photograph, Pat's quilt is accentuated by both free motion quilting and embroidery that brings her work to life. To top it off, her quilt is not your traditional square or rectangle, but its own distinct badge-like shape. What are we talking about? You'll just have to see for yourself.

See more of Pat's quilt and learn from her as well by watching her in How to Make Mosaic Quilts with Pat Durbin.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: The Heart of the "Madder"

"Madder Circuit" by Kim Eichler-Messmer

Madder Circuit was made using fabric that was dyed in Madder root. At the time, Kim was actually growing Madder in her garden, but it wasn't hers that was used to dye this quilt. It was created using a machine sewn Shibori technique. To accomplish this, Kim folded the fabric origami-style, stitched it with the sewing machine, and then submerged it in the dye. After it was done, Kim was very interested in how the dye seeped into different parts of the fabric in different ways to create light and dark areas in the symmetry of folding. This gave her the opportunity to put the patterns together in a wonderfully graphic way.
