Featured Quilt - A Marvelously Quilted Work

Guanaco by Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry won Third Place - Small Wall Quilts: Pictorial (Sponsored by PFAFF) at AQS Quiltweek 2022 in Paducah. Caryl's quilt features a guanaco, which is an animal that is closely related to the llama.

Of her work, Caryl says,
To create the design, I combined elements from two different photos with digital painting. One photo was of the guanaco, and the other was of the Andes mountain range, shrouded in clouds. The background was digitally painted, and the edges were faded to white. The image of the guanaco is very heavily quilted with dozens of different colors of thread and the sky and outer edges are quilted in a meandering, and spiraling pattern."

Karey Patterson Bresenhan and Nancy O’Bryant Puentes Will Bring You Tears of Joy
The Houston Quilt Festival Founders Are A Delight

One of the joys of The Quilt Show is being able to go in depth on a topic you might know something about, but don't know the whole story. This doesn't just apply to quilting techniques however, as we also take a deep dive into the lives of quilters. For this show, we did just that with Karey Patterson Bresenhan and Nancy O'Bryant Puentes, the founders of the Houston Quilt Festival, and our members just loved it:

The lovely interview with Karey and Nancy brought tears to my eyes! Having been to the festival in Houston (my idea of heaven) and witnessing all the work that goes into this wonderland for quilters, my respect and gratitude for these women rose even higher after seeing the "rest of the story" !! -

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Do You See The Dragon Too?
"Donald the Dotted Dragon" by Sue Bleiweiss

Donald the Dotted Dragon, like most of Sue's other quilts, utilizes her hand-dyed fabrics. Every fabric color you see in the quilt is hand-dyed, including the blacks. For this quilt, Sue wanted to do something more whimsical, having previously focused on cityscapes, buildings, and geometric shapes. What differentiates this quilt from her others, besides the fact that there is a dragon, was Sue having a primary focal subject to work with, which provided new challenges for her.
