Featured Quilt - Elephants to Inspire
"Inspired by a photo taken on safari in East Africa by Julie Gunlach,"Exuberance for the Gift of Life"was made for the auction at Microfinancing Partners in Africa a non-profit in Saint Louis that provides funds for small loans offered by organizations in Africa. Almost forty years ago Josephine served as a missionary in Sierra Leone. Making quilts for this organization is a way to still connect with her missionary heart. She considers this quilt her masterpiece and is grateful it brought in a significant sum."
Cotton has been woven to make fabric for thousands of years. Today, this natural fabric is available in a variety of weights, colors, patterns, and weaves. Quilters, especially traditional quilters, primarily use quilting cotton in their quilts. But quilters aren’t the only ones buying quilting cotton today. Many sewists are using quilting cotton to make clothes, bags, and other craft projects because of the fabric’s great quality and an assortment of colors and prints on the market. Let’s take a closer look at quilting cotton and the best way to make it work!

Learn How to Work with Vintage Neckties and Silks
Quiltmaker Julia McLeod joins Alex and Ricky in the Dallas studio to teach them how to tame and work with vintage neckties and silks. She then shows how stabilization and a foundation can make a paper pieced design so much easier to sew accurately. Then, textile artist Youngmin Lee returns to demonstrate a Korean method of quilting using mulberry paper cording.
"Electric Faerie of the Getty Garden"by Sheila Frampton Cooper
Sheila Frampton Cooper created Electric Faerie of the Getty Garden for the International Quilt Festival Special Exhibit: Good for You 2011. This was an international juried and judged exhibition of art quilts where the theme was Good for You - as in, "What's good for you? Chocolate, wine, video games?" As long as the quilt spoke to the theme, it was acceptable.
