Featured Quilt - Three Subjects, One Amazing Portrait

Of the many quilts exhibited as part of Bisa Butler's The World is Yours exhibit at the Jeffrey Deitch Gallery in New York City, several have subjects and titles tied to hip-hop. One of the standout pieces of the exhibit tied to this theme is her almost 10-foot-tall portrait quilt of hip-hip group Salt-N-Pepa and DJ Spinderella entitled Hot, Cool and Vicious. Named after their first album, and using a 1987 photograph by Janette Beckman as its basis, Bisa's quilt exudes cool and features a varied and vibrant color palette depicting the three in front of a reflective background with their lyrics quilted into it.

Textile Talks: Akiko Ike - Boro Chiku-Chiku

This week's Textile Talk, presented by the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts & Fiber Arts, features Akiko Ike and her stitching style she calls “chiku-chiku.” "“Chiku-chiku” is the onomatopoeic word Ike has coined to describe the sound her broad needle makes as it runs into and out of the cloth. Now, nearly twenty years later, she has amassed a significant collection of vintage textiles laced with her own thread in her characteristic running stitch. Ike will present her studio, farm, and samples of her chiku-chiku work."

The Quilt Show Puzzle: What Do You See Staring Back?

"Reflections" by Carol Ann Waugh

Reflections is a group of four quilts by Carol that hang side-by-side next to each other that feature hand-dyed and painted fabric. She chose to paint and hand-dye her fabric because she wasn't finding the fabric she was looking for in stores. For Reflections, Carol wanted to have both the vertical lines and the horizontal lines separated out, meaning the dyed and painted fabric design moves vertically and the stitching horizontally. As a result of this, the piece gets more and more complex as you move up and down each quilt.

See more of Carol's quilts in How to Do Decorative Stitching on a Quilt with Carol Ann Waugh.
