Featured Quilt - A Bisa Butler Original

TheQuiltShow.com was lucky enough to visit the Jeffrey Deitch gallery in NYC on the final day of the Bisa Butler The World is Yours exhibit. Over the next few weeks we will be sharing photos from her fabulous exhibit.  We've featured Bisa before and you can learn more about her here and here. Her colorful and impactful quilts are created using quite unusual fabrics for quilts and you'll want to look at all the details from the background fabrics to her quilting designs.

Up first, The General, which is based "After a portrait of Harriet Tubman by W.H. Ernsberger, 1900 via Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture." What's amazing about all of Bisa's quilts is their scale. You just don't understand the grand size of each one until you see it in person. For example, this one measures 85.3" x 60", or 7 feet tall by 5 feet wide!

WeAllSew Tutorial: Machine Embroider a Rope Bowl

Caution: Super Fun Bowls Lie Ahead

As quilters, from time to time, we get in the habit of making one thing over and over just because we love it so much. Whether it's log cabin blocks, star blocks, or doilies, we'll keep making them until we find our next obsession. Well, does Kate Toney at WeAllSew have one for you. Learn from Kate how to Machine Embroider a Rope Bowl, but be warned, once you start you might not stop. She says, "Once you start sewing them up and adding awesome designer details like wrapped yarn, painted rope and more, you’re gonna be so eager to keep making more and more bowls."

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Trying To Stay Dry

"Rainy Day Ballet" by Geri Patterson-Kutras

Rainy Day Ballet is one of Geri's favorite quilts and the inspiration for it just came out of her imagination. She thought about the big city, and in the big city when it rains everybody is doing a kind of dance along the sidewalks trying to make their way around the droplets. Notice the details of the gal whose umbrella is turned inside out, the businessman with his newspaper over his head so he doesn't get wet, and the child doing the child-like thing of performing the "swan lake ballet" by jumping in the puddle. It's details like these that bring Geri's quilts to life with her inspired imagination.
