Featured Quilt - Multiple Awards and Multiple Techniques

Ookpik is a thread-painted snowy Owl made by Colette Dumont, but she also used machine appliqué, beading, couching, crystals, embroidery, and more...which is probably why the quilt has won awards in Paducah and Canada and been on display in Houston.

Colette writes, "Ookpik is a snowy owl in Inuktitut language, The center medallion is a thread painting, surrounded by a grid with a stained glass technique with lamé bias. The border is made with a reversible technique and embellished with beads and crystals. The photo of the Owl is provided by Gilles Archambault and the photo or background by me."

And keep your eyes open, Colette will be coming soon to The Quilt Show.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: An Appropriate Winter Quilt
"S Word Quilt" by Barbara Black

Barbara's S Word Quilt was made over twenty-five years ago with a group of six quilters who called themselves the S Word quilters. The group met at a retreat center in January and the "S" stood for snow, meaning they sewed together when it snowed at the retreat. The group used pieced neutral blocks for the background to have a palette on which to appliqué.
