Multi-Award Winning Abstract Quilt, What You Need to Hand Quilt, Alex Teaches The Wheat Ear Stitch, Dolce & Gabbana Spring Summer Show 2021, Carolyn Friedlander's "Shirts" Mini Quilt, An Early Spring Puzzle

Welcome to Wednesday - February 9, 2022
Featured Quilt - First Place Abstract at Road to California 2022

Dreamweaver II by Beth Schillig won not one, but TWO awards in different Abstract categories at different shows. It won First Place - Abstract at Road to California 2022 and Third Place - Abstract at Houston 2021. Beth says about creating the quilt, "After hand dyeing my fabrics, I love exploring the capabilities of my various machines. An electric cutter machine creates perfect circles and ovals in heavy interfacing for appliqué templates. My sewing machines are used for accurate piecing and decorative embroidery stitches to enhance the appliqués, and my sit down longarm for freehand quilting including ruler work. My only handwork is to attach the yo-yo’s and add beads."
Alex Shows The Ins and Outs of Hand Quilting
While Hand Quilting, Go With The Flow

In our latest show, Alex discusses the importance of using a fabric backing that is not a tight weave and a large enough piece (that can be pieced together) to avoid stretching. While also talking about about needle and thread choices, she shows you how to rock the needle to achieve the most even stitches along with a trick for tying off in the air with a French knot.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: An Early Spring Quilt Blooms
"May Day" by Emily Taylor

Made in May during the quarantine of 2020, Emily Taylor's May Day quilt is a collage wonder. On a quest to create some beautiful flowers in fabric, Emily felt that she finally nailed it with this one. Utilizing pieces of fabric smaller than her hand, Emily used the foundation panel technique to create the values and dimensions seen throughout the quilt.
