Featured Quilt - Best of Show at the 2024 AQS QuiltWeek - Daytona Beach

After winning Second Place in the Pieced-Large category at Road to California 2024 last month with her quilt Dreams of a Summer Day, Margaret Solomon Gunn is back this month winning an even bigger award. Her quilt, Eyes of the Forest, won Best of Show at the 2024 AQS QuiltWeek in Daytona Beach. On the work she put into the design of the quilt, Margaret said, "The design is original and all applique is turned-edge and hand stitched, even the very tiny 1/4″ berries!"

Gee's Bend Quilts at The Philadelphia Museum of Art

View Gee's Bend Quilts from the Collection

The Quilt Show recently visited Philadelphia and ran across this exhibit featuring the quilts of Gee's Bend at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (there through July 7, 2024) that we wanted to share with you. Of the quilts on display, the museum said, "The 13 quilts on view were acquired in 2017 through the Souls Grown Deep Foundation and were selected to tell the history of quilt-making in Gee's Bend (Alabama) from the mid-1920s to 2005. The significance of these quilts to their makers is expressed in the quilters' own words gathered from contemporary interviews."

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Dreaming of the Sea

"Caribbean Dreams" by Betty Ford-Smith

Betty lived in St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands for three years teaching school. She missed being there and the water a lot, so she created Caribbean Dreams as a way to remember her experiences. According to Betty, the water in St. Thomas is different than the water in Florida where she lives now, so she wanted to capture what she saw in it by using glistening blue and water-inspired fabrics. She also included rings of yellow fabric throughout to represent all of the sunshine in the islands and Florida.

Here's what Betty had to say about the logistics of making this quilt. "It measures 61 x 63 inches and weighs 19 lbs. This quilt took 2 months to make and a little over 200 hours, sewing sometimes for 5 and 10 hours a day. The quilt used a little over 45 yards of fabric which were hand cut into 2,250 5 x 5 inch squares."
