Featured Quilt - Second Place Abstract at Road to California 2023

Renew Anew by Elizabeth Ray won Second Place in the Abstract category at Road to California 2023. Elizabeth's quilt utilizes the 2021 Pantone colors of the year to invigorate her work with something new and sustaining for the future.

She says, "Post 2020, emerging we came out to interact, renew, and shine anew. I used the 2021 Pantone Colors of the year to create a radiating plus with a single simple block design, rotated and recolored throughout. The stripes, like blinds, shading, and exposing the different colors as they interact. The interactions, colors and shapes, highlight my many feelings and relationships, internal and external, being challenged yet renewed to continue anew."

Extending A Design with Sherri Lipman McCauley

Branching Out Your Design Work

Sherri Lipman McCauley shares a technique for extending a design with paint based on a square of upholstery fabric. The square of upholstery fabric becomes the foundation for additional scrap fabric selections and the point where extended lines of paint continue across the design. Along with applying paint directly to the fabric, Sherri also discusses the various types of paint and the importance of understanding how each works.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: A Mother's Love

"Mama Love - Giraffe" by Jayme Crow

How can you not love a mama with her baby giraffe? Mama Love - Giraffe was designed by Jayme's daughter and inspired by her and Jayme's mutual love of giraffes. When picking out fabric for the quilt, she used a great set of batiks, with the one chosen for the fur just standing out to Jayme as particularly giraffe. As for the quilt itself, the giraffes both have 3-dimensional manes that stick up.
