Featured Quilt - First Place Modern Quilt in "A Celebration of Color" at Houston 2023

While the blocks may not be in the shape of footballs, the cubes featured throughout Jodi Murphy's quilt, Inner Cube, may have you start seeing the X's and O's featured on the coach's player's sheet with with its intricate designs. Quilted by Teresa Silva, Jodi's quilt won First Place - Modern Quilt as part of the A Celebration of Color competition featured on the 2023 Houston International Quilt Festival.

Jodi says of her quilt, "English Paper Piecing is a way for me to express my love of geometry, color, architecture, and Tula Pink fabrics. I used the Tumbling Block to give the quilt dimension by repeating the placement of light, medium, and dark values throughout the quilt. I love using fabric to create secondary patterns - the rainbow effect from top to bottom, the diagonal lines of the black and white stars, and the rings of color created by each block."

After viewing the quilt in the gallery, be sure to click the Quilt Video tab to watch an interview between Jodi and Bob Ruggiero, Vice President of Communications for Quilts Inc., where they discuss Inner Cube in more depth, detail, and Jodi's "fondness for Tula Pink Fabrics!"

The Quilt Show Puzzles: It's Super Bowl Weekend!

For San Francisco - "The Lone Robin" by Julia McLeod

Created during the pandemic, Julia created The Lone Robin as a fun exercise for the San Francisco Quilt Guild. "It's like a round robin, but it's not going anywhere. You're doing it on your lonesome." Julia says that you challenge yourself because you do something one month not knowing what's coming, causing each month in turn to create something new and exciting for the quilt. The beautiful quilting on Julia's Lone Robin was done by Nancy Williams.

For Kansas City - "Bridal Stairway" by Dee Christopher

Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words, and for Bridal Stairway by Dee Christopher that was the literal truth. Dee had a Kansas City Star pattern to make the quilt, however the pattern only had the picture and no directions on how to make it. Being the problem solver that she is, Dee studied and made drawings of the picture many times until she figured out how to make the quilt for herself.
