Featured Quilt - Second Place Miniature at Houston 2022

Paradise Valley by Kumiko Frydl won Second Place in the Miniature category at the 2022 Houston International Quilt Festival. Kumiko is a master of the miniature quilt, and this quilt is no different. She says, "The Covid-19 pandemic engulfed the old normal for many. Staying at home and working on projects is normal for me. Luckily, I can work from the safety of my bubble overlooking paradise in my garden, where butterflies flutter innocently. Paradise Valley contemplates a return to simpler times and is dedicated to all who have suffered or sacrificed."

Bonnie K. Hunter shares her quilter-friendly system for cutting and sorting scraps. Bonnie also has a technique for making quick 2"-finished half-square-triangle units from strips, with her ingenious "Leaders and Enders" technique, and makes thrifty use of leftovers and thread. Bonnie has created an exercise to help you practice your string piecing and precision piecing while making a block from her Jamestown Landing quilt.

Learn How to Do Improv Patchwork - Maria Shell Block

Maria Shell shares her method for creating visually vibrant and patterned quilts created by sewing small units or strips together. It is through sewing, cutting and joining a large number of strip set units that Maria pushes a design as far she can with the end result being an entirely new design. To practice Maria's technique, Ann Myhre has created an improv block exercise.

"Embroidered Butterflies" by Catherine Redford

Embroidered Butterflies was made for a book that Catherine wrote, and features twelve butterflies that she embroidered. After sending them off to be photographed individually, she assembled them into this quilt using beautiful handmade fabrics from Malaysia. Each butterfly is hand stitched by Catherine.
