Featured Quilt - Second Place Machine Quilting at Houston 2022

Third Time's a Charm by Ruth Ohol won Second Place - Machine Quilting (Sponsored by BERNINA) at the 2022 Houston International Quilt Festival. Ruth says of the design of the quilt that, "The center medallion originated from a Yoko Saito pattern. I altered that pattern for this quilt. The border design is original."

As for the quilt's inspiration, she says that its creation turned out to be a little bit serendipitous. "I start a new quilt each year during baseball season while my husband watches every Yankees game. This is my third quilt in the series. Covid forced me to use fabrics on hand, and the silk was in my stash. I was thrilled when I found it! All of the quilting designs are original."

Improv with Maria Shell

Alaskan quilter, Maria Shell, who refers to herself as a ‘bit maker’, shares her method for creating visually vibrant and patterned quilts created by sewing small units or strips together. It is through sewing, cutting and joining a large number of strip set units that Maria pushes a design as far she can with the end result being an entirely new design.

To practice Maria's technique, Ann Myhre has created an improv block exercise. So, get your fat eighths together and go.

Go Machine Quilting Beyond The Ditch with Catherine Redford

Learn to Do More Than Simply "Stitch in the Ditch"

In this week's show, Catherine Redford discusses the ins and outs of pressing seams open versus to one side and how that can affect your machine quilting. She then shares how to elevate the look of straight-line quilting when it’s combined with additional machine stitch patterns and a walking foot. From simple wonky lines, to serpentine waves, to organic curves, there are so many possibilities for your quilt project.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Take A Trip to France

"In My Next Life" by Cheryl Lynch

After she visited France, Cheryl wanted to recreate an iconic French scene from Avignon in the Provence region. In My Next Life has everything you would expect to set the scene, a bicycle, an old door, and a window with a grill on it. And, like many of Cheryl's quilts, it is done in a mosaic style featuring many, many pieces of fabric. Everything from the window down to the bars of the grill are individual tiny squares of fabric. Don't you feel like you are right there in France with her?
