Featured Quilt - Third Place Abstract at Houston 2023

Wing Variation 2 by Jane Sassaman won Third Place in the Abstract category (Sponsored by Sew Steady) at the 2023 Houston International Quilt Festival. No stranger to vibrant and beautiful colors, Jane has both on full display in her quilt. While a first look at it might make you think you're looking a lava lamp, Jane had an entirely different inspiration in mind. And once you hear what it is, the design aesthetic will become clear to you. She says, "This quilt is one of a series inspired by the wings of butterflies and moths."

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Art Inspired by Art

"Mondrian's Window" by Allie Aller

Mondrian's Window, named after the painter Piet Mondrian, is Allie's return to functional quilts. So even though it is a stunning showpiece, Allie considers it to be a couch quilt as it is made with cotton batting, simply quilted, and is meant to be used. The quilt was created using both silk and Radiance by Robert Kaufman, a 50/50 silk/cotton blend. The luminosity of the fabrics gives a much more vivid impact and when quilted, the angles of light reflect off their surfaces. Allie even used plaid silk in this wonderful composition of fabrics.
