Featured Quilt - Third Place Pictorial Small at Houston 2022

Come On In, the Water's Fine by Roxanne Nelson won Third Place in the Pictorial Small category at the 2022 Houston International Quilt Festival. Derived from a Shutterstock image, Roxanne's quilt brings awareness to one of nature's most beautiful creatures that's in danger of disappearing.

She says, "This majestic Sumatran Tiger is one of 400 critically endangered animals remaining in the wild. I hope to honor and share his beauty through this quilt. My technique is a micro-collaged and fused fabric for realistic expression. Frayed-edge fabric enhances the water texture, suggesting movement. From a distance, the tiger seems real, but upon close inspection, the exclusive use of fabric is evident. The tiger is enticing you into the water…how can you resist?"

Let Your Fabric Do the Work

In Show 2010, the Queen of Kaleidoscope Quilts, Paula Nadelstern, is here to teach a new method for making complex-looking quilts. She uses easy piecing techniques and lets the symmetrical fabric do the work of fooling the eye.

You can practice piecing with complex fabrics with this sample block from Ann Myhre based on Paula's techniques.

Leanne E.

"I have been a member for quite a few years and love the shows and variety of guests. I was in the audience the first time Sheila Frampton Cooper was a guest. I liked her then and I love her now. What a talented, personable woman! Her piece with Margaret Fabrizio was fantastic. I will remember so many of her comments, as well as her quilts and wonderful attitude. The Quilt Show Puzzle: Rings of Double Wedded Bliss

"Double Wedding Ring" by Tara Faughnan

When Tara Faughnan saw that Julie Silber was selling an antique Double Wedding Ring quilt, she knew that she wanted it. At the time though she just couldn't bring herself to purchase it. So to honor the quilt, she made her own. Tara's Double Wedding Ring quilt is hand quilted, and it was her first foray into harmony and discordance. The idea that you can have two things at the same time being both chaotic and in order. We think Tara did an excellent job merging the two conflicting concepts into one harmonious quilt.
