Featured Quilt - Third Place Machine Quilting at Houston 2022
Trip to America by Karen Hogan won Third Place - Machine Quilting (Sponsored by BERNINA) at the 2022 Houston International Quilt Festival. Karen's quilt was inspired by a trip she "almost" took to the United States from Australia. She says, "Trip to America was inspired by a planned first-time journey out of Australia to teach at the MQX quilt show. Unfortunately, my journey was cancelled because of Covid. Although I could have threadpainted areas to have the designs pop more, my objective was to create an entirely digital design made up of many individual patterns and brought to my machine as one design to quilt as a wholecloth."

In reviewing images of the quilts in the Museum of Texas Tech University’s collection, two striking quilts caught the attention of Dr. Marian Ann J. Montgomery.
Similar in look, but differing in color, they are of strong graphic design. Unfortunately, as they are not labelled, the makers are unknown.
Find out more by reading about these two similar, yet different, 19th Century Quilts.

"Deep Sea Portals" by Sheila Frampton
Cooper
Deep Sea Portals was made at a time when Sheila was using yellows as a starting point for her quilts, which is what she did for this piece. From there, the colors bloom out of the yellows, which are acting as the focal points for the quilt, and the rest of the work just grows and moves from one thing to another. Often Sheila is inspired by the ocean and water, with this piece reminding her of portals, hence the title.
See more of Sheila's quilts in Improv with Intention and Working with Jelly Rolls with Sheila Frampton Cooper.
