Featured Quilt - Third Place Hand Quilting / Hand Made at Houston 2022

Let's Sing a Happy Song by Hideko Kawai won Third Place in the Hand Quilting / Hand Made category at the 2022 Houston International Quilt Festival. Featuring beautiful hand piecing, hand appliqué, and quilting, Hideko made the quilt as a way to harken back to a simpler and more happy time. She says, "I created this quilt with a wish for a return to the bright life we used to have."

Cross Generational Quilting

Join Sue Nickels and her daughter, Ashley Nickels, as they cover the spectrum of quilting eras. In Show 1808, Sue demonstrates how she designs and lays out an old-fashioned appliqué flower border, often starting with an inspiring focal fabric. She also demos how she makes a complex little bird, and then later embellishes its eye.

Ashley loves grid work, and has found inspiration in the front gates she sees in her San Francisco neighborhood. After photographing them and designing the quilt tops, she uses a sketch program to audition a quilting design on top of the photo.

As a bonus, we also visit Roderick Kiracofe who invites us to see some of the unique quilts in his collection.

For practice, Ann Myhre has designed a delightful Bird on a Wire block to help you learn Sue's technique.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: A "Whale" of a Quilt

"Whale And I" by Jennifer Sampou

Taking a similar approach to a popular quilt she made before, Jennifer Sampou took a large animal, in this case, a whale, and set it against a simple background to emphasize the appliqué work done in the quilt. Featuring quilting by Jenny K. Lyon, enjoy Whale And I.
