Featured Quilt - Viewer's Choice at Houston 2023

Wonderful Things - 100 Years of King Tutankhamun by Sally White Pelikan with the Bits Art Quilters won Viewer's Choice (Sponsored by Quilter's Rule) at the 2023 Houston International Quilt Festival and it isn't hard to see why. Sally, and 23 members of Bits Art Quilters, interpreted from Shutterstock a vector drawing by Kaiwut Niponkaew of King Tut's sarcophagus. It turned into an extraordinary quilt.

Of their work, they had this to say, "In November of 1922, in The Valley of the Kings, Egypt, archeologist Howard Carter, thrust a candle into a small hole in the doorway of a newly discovered tomb. This quilt is a collaborative effort by 23 members of Bits Art Quilters of St. Louis, MO. It was envisioned and guided by Sally White Pelikan. We aren't concerned about a curse!"

Extracting A Simple Landscape with Pat Bishop

Learning The Language of Landscapes

Pat Bishop begins her first demo by discussing the tools and variety of fabrics she uses for building a design directly on a prepared background of fusible stabilizer. She then shows how to progress from sky to sun to landscape using fabrics of various sizes. When all elements are fused in place, quilting with the walking foot and very thin thread allows her to create additional texture without the thread being visible. Then Pat ties things up by teaching you how to finish and mount the work onto canvas.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Just Showing Off

"A Splendid Display" by Cindy Seitz-Krug

A Splendid Display is named after what its central figure, the peacock, does so well, giving off a splendid display. Cindy loves both peacocks and peacock fabrics, so when she saw a line of fabric that featured them and similar colors she just started collecting it. Cindy likes making quilts where you start in the center, like a medallion quilt, and then adding borders outward. She did this with this quilt, but instead of a medallion used a peacock and left lots of space around her borders for quilting.
