Featured Quilt - Third Place Abstract at Houston 2022

Zigzags & Circles #8 by Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry won Third Place in the Abstract category at the 2022 Houston International Quilt Festival. Caryl, who has been a guest on The Quilt Show, had this to say about how she created the quilt's colorful, yet transparent look, through her use of simple shapes and color choices.

"This piece is the eighth in a series combining zigzags, curves, and circles. I drew the design in Corel Draw, added digital painting, and had it printed by Spoonflower.com. I graduated many shapes from color to color. As I arranged them in the design, I made the areas where they overlapped into separate shapes and chose duller colors in those shapes to create the illusion that all the objects are transparent."

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Finished After Much Work

"Enough is Enough!" by Catherine Redford

Enough Is Enough! was started by Catherine in the early 2000s. At the time, she had just moved to the US and did not have a work permit, being here as an accompanying spouse, so she had plenty of time to take as many quilt classes as she wanted. She took a two-day class with Jan Krentz, who was very kind and helpful to her, and whenever Jan needed to show the class something, Catherine had Jan show on her quilt, this particular quilt actually, which allowed her to get the whole of the star done.

She then took the quilt home and continued practicing her machine quilting, but then put it away for a bit. When an event for her guild arose which was only taking a certain number of quilts, she decided to bring it back out and elevate the quilt so that hers would be accepted. So, Catherine sat for two weeks and added the beads to the quilt, which includes a beaded archway all around the edge, and the quilt was accepted.
