Featured Quilt - Second Place Pieced at Houston 2022
Memories from Hotel Fahey by Ruth Ohol won Second Place in the Pieced category at the 2022 Houston International Quilt Festival. Ruth's quilt is already a winner this year, having taken home Second Place in the Large Quilts: Stationary Machine Quilted category (Sponsored by Husqvarna Viking) at AQS Quiltweek 2022 in Paducah.
The inspiration for making the quilt was deeply personal for Ruth. She says, "This quilt is dedicated to the memory of a dear friend. She hosted me at her home so often, I nicknamed it Hotel Fahey. She was a lover of blue and white quilts. It seemed fitting to dedicate this to her
memory." The quilt was strip pieced, and all of the machine quilting designs were hand drawn by Ruth.
And don't forget to click the Quilt Video tab and watch Tamara Hanes talk with Ruth on the floor of AQS Quiltweek 2022 about her quilt after she won her award.

Transform Your Quilting 2 - Week 7 Review
Valerie C. White Block - Faux Appliqué and
Paintstiks
In Show 1508, mixed-media textile artist Valerie C. White showed us how to produce her thoughtfully constructed little (5" x 11") artworks, and shared ideas for enhancing
them with hand and machine stitching, paint sticks, watercolor pencils, and markers. Try your hand at making a small art quilt with this faux appliqué technique and Paintstiks with a leaf pattern created just for us by Valerie.
Jenny Bowker Block - Machine Appliqué Techniques In Show 1804, Jenny Bowker shared her quilting style, and also walked us through the process of dissecting a tiling design and creating a vellum pattern for it. She demonstrates this
technique with a lovely design featuring two overlapping vases. For the practice block, Ann Myhre has created a vase tile sample for you to try Jenny's technique.

Houston Has Been Good To Melissa
Melissa Sobotka's quilts have amazed us over

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Wonderfully Wooly Butterflies
|
|
|
|
"Wool Appliquéd Butterflies" by Catherine Redford
After completing
her Embroidered
Butterflies quilt, Catherine was asked if she would make her butterflies in wool as well. She obliged and redid them in wool for her quilt Wool Appliquéd Butterflies, adjusting the parameters to suit the material. In order to do this, she had to simplify the shapes a little to be able to cut the pieces out. For the embroidered butterflies she included lots of lines, but for the wool ones you could cut out all of those pieces and stitch them down. After simplifying them, she stitched them down using whip-stitch wool appliqué. These butterflies don't stray completely from their original counterpart, however, as they do feature some embroidery on top.
See more of Catherine's quilts in Embroidery Stitches, Straight Line Quilting, and Dorset Buttons with Catherine Redford.
