Featured Quilt - Second Place Pictorial Large at Houston 2022

Memories of a Maiko by Melissa Sobotka won Second Place in the Pictorial Large category at the 2022 Houston International Quilt Festival. Melissa, both friend and past guest of The Quilt Show, dove right into this piece and brought out all of the life-like features of its subject through her beautiful machine quilting work. She says, "This portrait is of a young Maiko, who was training to become a Geisha. — Kyoto, Japan, 2018"

Learn from Melissa, and see more of her quilts, by watching her in How to Create Photo Imagery Quilts with Melissa Sobotka.

Learn Quilting and Machine Appliqué Techniques

Jenny Bowker in Show 1804 creates incredible pieced landscapes with exotic images from the Middle East and Malaysia. Jenny shares her quilting style, and also walks us through the process of dissecting a tiling design (whether simple or complex), and creating a vellum pattern for it. She demonstrates this technique with a lovely design featuring two overlapping vases.

For the practice block, Ann Myhre has created a vase tile sample for you to try Jenny's technique.

Catherine Redford Delights with Dorset Buttons

Dig Into Dorset Button Design

In our brand new show, Catherine Redford talks about the traditional English heritage craft of Dorset button making which began near the town of Shaftesbury, a county in Dorset in the 1600s. Using just a few simple tools and threads of different weights, she shows how to create a wheel design button called the Blandford Cartwheel. Then at the end of the demonstratrion, we take a look at variations of button designs.

Learn from Catherine by watching Embroidery Stitches, Straight Line Quilting, and Dorset Buttons with Catherine Redford.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Everyone Loves a Wedding

"Rustic Wedding" by Missie Carpenter

Missie used a layering technique of wool and cotton in her beautiful Rustic Wedding quilt. The wool appliqué is raw-edge while the cotton appliqué has a finished edge. Its title is derived from its use of the wedding ring shape in the center, along with its rustic nature pulled from the use of wools, cottons, and its coloring. Ricky loved the visual impact that the quilt gave off because of Missie's use of color.
