Featured Quilt - Another Rhapsody, Another Winner

Stop us if you've heard this one before, but another rhapsody quilt has taken home a big award. Margaret Solomon Gunn's quilt, Hungarian Rhapsody, is already a multiple award-winner, having won Second Place - Mixed at Road to California 2022 and First Place - Traditional category at PIQF 2021, but that didn't stop it from winning again. This time it took home the Best Movable Machine Workmanship Award at the 2022 AQS Quiltweek show in Grand Rapids.

If you're curious about the design work put into the quilt, Margaret says, "The hand appliqué mimics patterns seen in Hungarian crewel embroidery. My hand-guided longarm quilting includes motifs to complete the garden theme. Accents of embroidery, lace, beads & crystals are added."

Rayna Gillman's Strip Sewing with No Rules or Rulers
No Rulers, No Rules, No Problem!

Using a jellyroll as an easy starting point, Rayna Gillman shows how to free-form cut two to three gently curved strips from a 2 ½” piece of fabric in our brand new show. Because of their randomness, you'll see how the resulting mini strips are more interesting when sewn together with other strips.

Learn from Rayna by watching her in Upcycling Orphan Blocks and Improv Strip Piecing with Rayna Gillman | How To do Y-Seams with Ricky Tims.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: A Quilt That Plays Dress Up
"Dress Up" by Jamie Fingal

Dress Up was created by Jamie in 2012 for the 8 That Create
gallery show in New York and features one of her favored color palettes, red, white, and black. The quilt's title not only describes its titular dress though, as it cleverly applies to the materials used to make it as the skirt of the dress is made entirely out of zipper trim.

See more of Jamie's quilts in How to Make Prayer Flags with Jamie Fingal | How to Do Bobbin Work with Gina Perkes.
