Featured Quilt - Best of Show at AQS QuiltWeek Grand Rapids 2024
Flowers in full bloom to Kirara by Ayako Kawakami just took home the Best of Show Award at AQS QuiltWeek - Grand Rapids 2024. This is the second Best of Show award for Ayako's quilt, having won Best of Show at Road to California 2023. It also received First Place - Hand Crafted / Hand Made (Sponsored by Flynn Quilt Frame Company) at Houston International Quilt Festival 2023. Congratulations Ayako!
This stunning quilt is unlike any you've ever seen, featuring a collection of beautifully designed and quilted blocks carefully connected by smaller quilted objects that create amazing cut-out designs. Ayako says of her work, "I made this quilt for my daughter who loves flowers. My daughter will come of age this year. I made this quilt in the hope that she will be able to spend her coming of age with a bright smile. It is my style to make quilts with embroidery. I embroidered the embroidery design as I thought of it, without drafting it. The heart motif is Crazy quilts. The quilting is hand quilting and Japanese sashiko (boro). I enjoyed the many colonial knot stitches." |

In Memoriam - Carole Lyles Shaw |
It is with sadness that we inform you that we have lost another wonderful quilter. Carole Lyles Shaw passed recently passed away unexpectedly and it is a great loss to the quilting community. Carole was a guest on The Quilt Show just last year and brought with her modern, colorful, and vibrant improv quilts that featured her love of individualism and free expression.
To celebrate Carole, we are opening her show, Learn How to Work in a Series and an Afro-Modern Fractured Disappearing 9-Patch with Carole Lyles Shaw, up to be FREE for everyone so that you can all see what made Carole so special.
After watching her appearance on TQS, spend some more time with Carole and see her interview with Ricky where they discuss the 100 Day Project for artists. |
