Featured Quilt - Visitors Choice Award at the 2023 Festival
of Quilts Birmingham
Reaching by Helen Creasey won the Visitors Choice Award at the 2023 Festival of Quilts Birmingham. Inspired by the tale of The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen, Helen's quilt leans more into the story's morals than the playfulness of the animated film. She says, "Hans Christian Andersen wrote “A mermaid has no tears, and therefore she suffers so much more.” A mythological creature of beauty and temptation with maybe a perilous outcome. Pushing my design and quilting skills to try and reach a dream."

"Orangutan" by Nancy Brown
Orangutan is based on a childhood trip that Nancy took to the Los Angeles Zoo where she took a photo of the orangutan depicted in the quilt. Back when she saw the exhibit it wasn't all that good with a fake tree and cement surrounding the orangutan, so for the quilt she wanted to put him in a nice natural background full of lush foliage and trees that she pieced. Since that initial trip, Nancy has returned to the LA Zoo and is happy to report that the orangutans are living a happier life in a much more naturalistic exhibit.
