Featured Quilt - Best of Show at 2022 AQS QuiltWeek in Grand Rapids, MI

They've done it again! Masterpiece Award winners Gail Stepanek and Jan Hutchison have added another award to their trophy case, winning Best of Show at 2022 AQS QuiltWeek in Grand Rapids, MI with their quilt Spangled. This quilt is no stranger to winning awards though, having taken home First Place - Balanced Piecing and Appliqué at the Houston International Quilt Festival in 2019.

On putting the quilt together, the two had this to say. "Gail paper pieced a typical Dahlia block with an additional line added to each petal, splitting it in half. She hand appliquéd the sashing dots. Fusible black glitter vinyl was used for the swag border and dots. Using heavyweight black thread, Jan mimicked the loopy border design in each pieced block. Contrasting black thread was also used in the outer border."

The Quilt Show Puzzle: A Cavalcade of Scrappy Stars
"Starflake" by Blair Stocker

Starflake was made entirely out of fabric from Blair's scrap bins, which she keeps organized by color. Since the bins were overflowing at the time she was making this quilt, she saw this as a sign and decided to pull all the green scraps, divide them into value groups, and create the blocks utilized in the quilt. The only reason there is a pink edge in the corner is because Blair had run out of green by that point, so she pulled from the pink scrap bin and kept going. All the fabrics used in the quilt are divided up into dark, medium, and light value groups.
