Featured Quilt - AQS QuiltWeek Paducah 2024 Best of Show

Serenity by Molly Hamilton-McNally just took home Best of Show (Sponsored by Janome) at the 2024 AQS QuiltWeek in Paducah. Molly's quilt is no slouch, having been featured in multiple quilt shows in the last couple of years, including the 2021 Houston International Quilt Festival and Road to California 2022 where it won Third Place in the Appliqué category. Now it gets to have its moment in the sun and is the star of the show here in Padacuh.

About the quilt itself, Molly had this to say, "My quilt, Serenity, slowly emerged during this past dark and dreadful year. Pairs of birds, calm and safe at rest, are in shades of red which, in my culture, represents future hope and happiness. Along with a touch of whimsy, see if you can find my goldfish. I want to extend these same wishes of hope and happiness to everyone."

Wait, Who Is That?

Rare Sighting of TQS Photographer

Once in a while, our TQS Photographer and Newsletter editor steps in front of the camera, but it has to be a very rare occasion. In this instance, Mary Kay Davis got to see her quilt live and in person at the National Quilt Museum as part of the New Quilts from an Old Favorite: Roaring Twenties exhibit. Click through to see Mary Kay's quilt and learn about it and the exhibit.

New Quilts from an Old Favorite: Roaring Twenties, will be on display at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, KY from March 15, 2024 – July 30, 2024.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: The Traditional With The Not-So Traditional

"Temperance" by Mary Kerr

With Temperance, Mary wanted to challenge herself to see how including non-traditional vintage fabrics in a quilt would work. So Temperance incorporates a needle-point pillow top that had never been finished. The needle-point itself dates back to the 1940s and 1950s and it is paired with blocks from the 1880s. It is surrounded by a poison green colored fabric used for the border, which is cut into the shape of "T's" for temperance. Vicki Maloney did the quilting on it, and she said she had to add some extra batting underneath the center starts to even out the thickness of the different fabrics.
