Featured Quilt - Second Place Improvisation at QuiltCon 2024

Lahaina by Patty Simmons won Second Place - Improvisation (Sponsored by SAQA) at QuiltCon 2024. As its title would suggest, Patty's quilt is a moving tribute to the city of Lahaina on the island of Maui that suffered such hardships last year.

She says, "Wind and fire joined forces to create a perfect storm of devastation to the town of Lahaina, a tragedy for our entire country. I had started playing with the hands and faces fabrics well before the catastrophe destroyed the entire town, not knowing where my quilt was heading. But on August 9, 2023, the day following the total destruction, I knew what this quilt would become: a tribute to the people who were lost and to the hands that helped halt the fire. I created an image of the fire with winds circling to keep it aflame. it is devastating what happens in such a short period of time.

See Maday Delgado's Beautiful and Sustainable Quilts

See Hand Stitched Beauties That Are Thoughtfully Put Together

Growing up in Cuba, Maday Delgado learned early on how to be resourceful. Making do with what you have while working slowly and mindfully resonated with her. In our brand new show, she discusses how as an art educator her mission is to share the benefits of making beautiful items with what is available to you. Creating layered quilts filled with stories, color, and an enormous amount of hand stitching is what she is known for. Take a look at just a small sampling of her wonderfully put together quilts. Some of them are even 2-in-1. What do we mean by that? You'll just have to watch and see for yourself!

In The Store - Australian Aboriginal Designs Fat Quarter Bundles by M & S Textiles Australia

G'day! We Have More Australian Fat Quarter Bundles Available!

These were so popular when we advertised them last week that we made a few more. We cut the bundles ourselves, so you won't find them anywhere else!

These beautiful and unique fabrics feature original designs from accomplished indigenous artists representing waterholes, bush seeds, gatherings, ancient stories, desert flowers, and many more traditional symbols and stories. The tradition of these symbols and stories goes back 50,000 years revealed by carbon dating of rock painting and cave painting.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Reaching The End of the Spool

"End of the Spin" by Melisssa Sobotka

End of the Spin is based on a photograph that Melissa took in a really edgy dress shop in New York City. The front window of the shop was lined with sewing machines, which drew Melissa in thinking it was a quilt shop, but when she got in there she realized it wasn't and then noticed the empty spools lining the walls. This intrigued her and she decided to make a quilt from it. The quilt itself depicts the ends of the spools of yarn used for weaving the weft. As with many of Melissa's other quilts, it is another multiple award-winner, taking home Best of Show at AQS Lancaster 2016 and the Gammill Master Award for Contemporary Artistry at Houston 2015 among other awards.

See more of Melissa's quilts in How to Create Photo Imagery Quilts with Melissa Sobotka.
