Featured Quilt - What's For Dinner?

Meatballs by Linda Leake is another one of the fantastic Modern quilts that was featured as part of the Piecing category at QuiltCon 2023. Linda says about her inspiration for her work, "This quilt grew from the pandemic lock-down months of making quilts and cooking meals. Spaghetti and meatballs were popular recipes at our house, so I naturally decided to design a celebration of the tasty orbs. This proved to be challenging, however, because I had made only traditional quilts with patterns. I realized I would need to take classes online to help me gain experience in designing and creating my own patterns. I also needed to loosen up and let my imagination take off. It's been a wonderful journey and a lesson that one is never too old to make new quilts or meatballs."

David Owen Hastings Demos Minimal Quilt Design

See How His Work is Inspired by Architectural Photography

David likes to work improvisationally and shows how paring down an architectural photo to its most basic lines of inspiration - sky, shadows, buildings, can create interesting quilt designs. Removing unwanted areas with a cropping tool, he then shows how to sketch out and enlarge the design. David finishes the segment by sharing examples of machine quilting that echo the shapes of a finished design.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: From Black and White To Color

"Copacabana" by Sherry Rogers-Harrison

After making multiple, and successful, black and white quilts, Sherry finally decided to take the dive with color and created her quilt, Copacabana. Featuring the same design in each of the four quadrants, Sherry accentuated and enhanced her work using Derwent Inktense Colored Pencils. Initially calling this technique ink-liqué, due to everyone claiming her work looked just like appliqué, she renamed it to paint-liqué after she began incorporating more materials such as paint.
