Featured Quilt - "In An Octopus' Garden"

Sometimes art can be indistinguishable from the real thing. A painting can look like a photo. A quilt looks life like, yet someone drew it on paper first. That is what Tonya Littmann's quilt looks like to us. Ruby was featured in the Animal Kingdom category at Houston in 2019 and was based on a drawing, three to be exact. Tonya explains her process as such, "This was inspired by three vintage drawings of octopuses. She was created with commercial and hand-dyed fabric markers and was quilted on a home sewing machine." But take one look at this quilt and tell us that that octopus isn't staring right at you at the aquarium.

A Log Cabin Quilt Unlike Any Other

While touring the International Patchwork Festival in Sitges, Ricky came across this remarkable log cabin quilt. He writes, "At the Spanish Patchwork Association show a log cabin quilt like I’ve never seen before." What does it look like? Take a gander for yourself and see if you agree with Ricky!

Using Just One Color

One Color Quilts. Monochromatic Quilts. However you say it, these quilts can be challenging and stunning. How do you get the subtle changes, the movement, the feel? Alex has some suggestions.

Alex will be LIVE TODAY, July 23, 2021 @ 10am PST, 1pm EST, and 6pm London time. All classes are recorded so they can be viewed later.

The Finer Points of Pinning

Pinning is important when there are a lot of points coming together. In this lesson, Dee will be showing blocks 5, 6, & 8. There are a lot of half-square triangles stuffed together. Precision piecing is vital for these blocks to look good. Dee shows you how.

Dee will be LIVE TOMORROW, July 24, 2021 @ 10am PST, 1pm EST, and 6pm London time. All classes are recorded so they can be viewed later.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Ring Around the Mariposa

image

"Mariposa" by Julia McLeod

Mariposa started life as a tablecloth that Julia found at an Oakland white elephant sale. Julia believes the tablecloth is from around the 1920s. She appliquéd a large Mariposa Lily in the center and added the silk border to frame it. With this quilt, as with her other work, Julia likes to take the material she has found out from the dusty drawer where it was kept and bring it into the light of day to be appreciated.
