Featured Quilt - Best Stationary Machine Workmanship Award at AQS QuiltWeek - Grand Rapids 2024

Andrea Brokenshire produces spectacular quilts inspired by the natural world around us. With a focus on appliquéd botanical quilts, her work has been taking home awards for their stunning attention to detail and photo-realistic appearances. Her quilt Ice Lilies took home the Best Stationary Machine Workmanship Award at AQS QuiltWeek - Grand Rapids 2024 last month and it is not hard to see why.

Also winning First PlacePictorial-Large at the 2023 Houston International Quilt Festival, Andrea says of Ice Lilies, "I have always loved Stargazer lilies and this one is planted next to my great-grandmother's Snowball bush. I love the juxtaposition between the smooth leaves of the lily and the serrated leaves of the Snowball bush. The challenge for me in this quilt was to create the different textures between the two. My focus was the stems and leaves, but of course, the lilies themselves are just wonderful too."

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Anyone For a Swim?

"Gone for a Dip" by Marcia Stein

Gone for a Dip was inspired by a photo that Marcia took in Santa Fe at the La Fonda Hotel. It wasn't until some years later when Marcia went to visit the original location that the photo was taken that she realized that it was taken in front of a parking garage. Having difficulty faithfully replicating the photo in her quilt, Marcia made the decision to create her own appropriate background for the setting rather than use the true parking garage one. The lounge chairs were created using striped fabric, rather than individually pieced strips.
