Featured Quilt - Viewers' Choice Award at Houston 2024
The 2024 Houston International Quilt Festival is now over, and with the end of the show comes the awarding of the Viewers' Choice Award. This year's Viewers' Choice Award (Sponsored by Quilter's Rule) was bestowed upon Once Upon a Time by Esther Tronchoni Simo, created with Peter Hayward. This amazingly realistic quilt, featured as part of the Pictorial - Small category, is a recreation of a picture by Anne Stokes.
Esther says, "We fell in love with the magic and mystery of Anne Stokes' picture and set out to recreate it as faithfully as possible in fabric. We combined our two very different fusing techniques, hoping that the delicate gentle girl and the bewitched dragon would stand out from a rather dark and sinister background." |

Create A Book That You Will Quilt In Instead of Read
Pati Fried shares a collection of small sampler stitch books created from leftover quilt blocks, vintage linens, hand-dyed fabrics, tea bags, and wool in our brand new show. These books serve as a playful area for experimenting with designs and honing your hand-stitching skills. She then shows how to construct your own stitch personalized book, which are easy to transport and offer time for mindful stitching on a small scale.

"Lilies of the Valley" by Sarah Ann Smith
Sarah Ann begins her series of "celebrating the ordinary" with her quilt Lilies of the Valley, which also celebrates her life in Maine. She says, "Every time I see my Lilies of the Valley I am reminded when a friend and her adult daughter, who grew up and lives in Germany, visited while they were in bloom some years back. In German, they are called "Maiblumen," or May blooms. I love that, I love their perfectly smooth seamless blossoms nodding gently in the breeze, I love how the leaves curl and wrap themselves around the blooms. I love how in autumn the blooms become crimson and orange little fruits, a late season surprise."
