Featured Quilt - Best Hand Workmanship at AQS QuiltWeek - Daytona Beach 2025 and First Place Hand Quilted Quilts at AQS QuiltWeek – Branson 2025
Flowers in full bloom to Kirara by Ayako Kawakami won Best Hand Workmanship at AQS QuiltWeek - Daytona Beach 2025 and First Place - Hand Quilted Quilts at AQS QuiltWeek – Branson 2025.
In addition to these recent awards, Ayako's quilt has also two Best of Show awards in the last two years at AQS QuiltWeek - Grand Rapids 2024 and at Road to California 2023, and received First Place - Hand Crafted / Hand Made (Sponsored by Flynn Quilt Frame Company) at Houston International Quilt Festival 2023. This is no ordinary quilt, as it features creative cut-outs born out of dazzling designed and quilted blocks that are carefully connected by smaller quilted objects.
As for the inspiration for the quilt, Ayako says, "I made this quilt for my daughter who loves flowers. My daughter will come of age this year. I made this quilt in the hope that she will be able to spend her coming of age with a bright smile. It is my style to make quilts with embroidery. I embroidered the embroidery design as I thought of it, without drafting it. The heart motif is Crazy quilts. The quilting is hand quilting and Japanese sashiko (boro). I enjoyed the many colonial knot stitches." |

Transforming Quilts Into Fantastic Fashion Creations and More
The Quilt Show.com talks with Fiber Artist Bianca Springer at QuiltCon 2025. Bianca is driven by a compelling vision: to craft culturally resonant artwork that inspires others to integrate art into their lives in meaningful ways. Observing a lack of representation in the maker community, she sought to fill that gap. Known for her skillful use of upcycled and quilted materials, Bianca’s creations are striking, vibrant, and richly diverse. In addition to her varied artistic endeavors, she designs embroidery patterns that authentically portray real individuals, capturing the beauty of their unique differences with elegance and precision.
Alex is LIVE TODAY, March 17, 2025 @ 10am PST, 1pm EST, and 6pm London time. All classes are recorded so they can be viewed later. |

"Feather Zone" by Jeanie Sumrall-Ajero and Teri Lucas
Feather Zone is a decagon quilt, meaning it has ten sides, and a collaboration between Jeanie and Teri. It features all printed fabric, and was inspired by a design that Cheryl Phillips had done after she started to make decagons. It was created in Kaleidoscope Kreator, and quilted by Teri. It won First Place at MQX East 2012 and Third Place at the Wisconsin Quilt Expo.
