Featured Quilt - "H"ow About We Admire the Eighth Quilt In Janet Stone's Alphabet Series?
Today we continue with our presentation of the quilts in Janet Stone's Alphabet series, currently hanging in the National Quilt Museum as part of her exhibit, Janet Stone: And Now I Know My ABCs!. Janet tells us that "each quilt contains the entire alphabet, not just a specific letter."
The eighth quilt is Mutton But Letters, and is the quilt that gave Janet the title of her book collecting all of her Alphabet quilts. She says, "I bought a brightly colored package of batik fat quarters, brought them to work to show them off, laid them on a table, and thought, 'those would make great sheep!' I constructed the blocks separately and then basted them on the yellow fabric background. I cut away the yellow fabric from behind to reduce bulk and then appliquéd a single bias fold tape around each block. For quilting, I used a cardstock alphabet as a template for the letters in the yellow border. I marked a 1/2" grid for the background of each block and used a plastic free motion disc foot with markings on the foot to quilt in between the markings for a 1/4" grid. I used many letters in my collection of embellishments as well as some printed alphabet fabrics in the blocks and in the flowers on the border."
Janet's quilts in the series have been collected and presented together in her most recent book, Mutton But Letters!, which is available to purchase in her Etsy shop or in the gift shop of The National Quilt Museum.
And a fun fact from Janet about this quilt: "I won a BERNINA 440QE sewing machine with this quilt that I still use and love to this day."

"Meow Mates" by Michelle Cain
When working with Jelly Rolls, one of the pitfalls is you never use every Jelly Roll strip in a project and you have some that are leftover. Michelle addressed this in her book, Not-Your-Typical Jelly Roll Quilts, and specifically designed Meow Mates as a way to use up all of the low volume strips that you cannot find a place for in your other projects. So, a lot of the fabrics in Meow Mates come from other projects that Michelle created for the same book.
