Featured Quilt - Most Innovative Use of Materials at Quilt National '25

Encounter of Lines and Surfaces II by Jongkyeong Lee won Most Innovative Use of Materials (Sponsored by Robert & Ardis James Foundation) at Quilt National ’25. It is easy to see why Jongkyeong won the Most Innovative Use of Materials award, because by looking at this quilt you would never guess what was used to create it. We think that the artist explains their technique the best, so we'll let them tell you how they did it.

"Recently, I have been immersed in a new technique involving organza, where I use a soldering iron instead of traditional sewing methods to create patchwork.

This technique involves layering organza fabric in two to four or more layers to create texture. Due to the nature of organza, the opposite side becomes visible, and both sides of the fabric are finished as reversible. Most impressively, the technique uses seam allowances of less than one millimeter, which often leaves viewers in awe of its intricacy."

The Quilt Show Puzzle: A Cool "Coral Reef" Quilt

"Pacific Coral Reef" by Jane Haworth

Jane was new to quilting when she moved to the United States, and one of the things she would do when she first got here was record Simply Quilts, hosted by our very own Alex Anderson. One of the episodes featured Susan Carlson, who was making a fish quilt. This opened Jane's eyes to the possibilities of using raw edge work in her quilt. As a result, Jane started to make fish quilts, which included her Pacific Coral Reef quilt from 2004 that was made with collage appliqué and machine quilting.
