Featured Quilt - Akiko Yoshimizu's Creative and Captivating "Cherry Blossom"
On Monday's LIVE, Alex interviewed Teresa Duryea Wong about "Kawaii, a culture of cuteness in Japan that is so pervasive it has its own name." During their discussion about Teresa's new book that she co-authored with Naomi Ichikawa, Kawaii Applique Quilts from Japan, Alex mentioned that one of the quilts that she loved and was blown away by from the book was Cherry Blossom by Akiko Yoshimizu. Akiko's quilt is a beautiful representation of the Kawaii style, which normally are "appliqué quilts made with tiny pieces, typically tens of thousands of carefully manipulated bits of fabric in one quilt."
Cherry Blossom itself won First Place in the Appliqué category at Houston International Quilt Festival 2022. Akiko says of her work, "I wanted to create a quilt with many girls on a pink background. Each of them has various faces with different hairstyles, clothes, and suited bags. There are 640 of them. It took a lot of time and effort to gather and arrange the fabrics to make the background a pink gradation. I hope this will make you feel gorgeous, as if cherry blossoms are in full bloom, or make you smile and feel kind." |

"Swan's Song" by Lisa Calle
Swan's Song is a whole cloth quilt that Lisa made in remembrance for her father after he passed away. His initials are quilted in the center, and the teardrops that surround it and spread outwards represent his children, his grandchildren, and his wife. It features the quilting motifs Lisa used in Swan's Song's companion quilt, Swan's Journey, which she made for her father while he was battling his illness.
