Featured Quilt - First Place Pictorial-Large at Houston 2023
You know Andrea Brokenshire. She's been a guest on The Quilt Show twice and produces wonderful floral-inspired quilts that you just can't get enough of. Some of those quilts were featured as part of an exhibit of Andrea's work at the 2023 Houston International Quilt Festival entitled Flower Power - Contemporary Painted Florals. One in particular, Ice Lilies, won First Place in the Pictorial-Large category at the show and is simply a stunner.
What part of nature inspired this quilt? Andrea says, "I have always loved Stargazer lilies and this one is planted next to my great-grandmother's Snowball bush. I love the juxtaposition between the smooth leaves of the lily and the serrated leaves of the Snowball bush. The challenge for me in this quilt was to create the different textures between the two. My focus was the stems and leaves, but of course, the lilies themselves are just wonderful too."
Can't get enough of Ice Lilies? Well, on today's LIVE Alex will be presenting an interview between Andrea and Lilo Bowman where they discuss the quilt in detail from the floor of the show. "Toucan In Paradise" by Grace Errea
Toucan In Paradise is a very early piece of Grace's when she was still trying to find herself. It features many techniques and materials, such as turned edge appliqué, raw edge appliqué, stuffed appliqué, yarn, and more. It shows that Grace was still in the process of searching for what she wanted to say and how she wanted to say it in her work.
