Featured Quilt - First Place Pictorial at Road to California 2025
Last year's Best of Show winner at the Houston International Quilt Festival is now this year's First Place - Pictorial winner at Road to California 2025. Still Life by Chen Jing won the award, and it's not hard to see why. Maybe you've already seen this amazingly detailed quilt that's made to look as if it is a framed painting. But did you know that the entire quilt measures only 18" x 17"? Take a look at it and try to convince yourself that that isn't a framed painting instead of a quilt made of silk.
Chen says, “I wanted to use silk to express a realistic still-life painting, including the picture and the frame. The realistic effect of the picture frame was achieved using embroidery by manually controlling it on a stationary machine. At the same time, I wanted to explore unique free-motion quilting to present different picture effects on the front and back of the work.” |
