Featured Quilt - If It Doesn't Snow Where You Are, Make It Snow Yourself
Depending on where they live, not everyone can always experience a snowy Christmas. So what do those people do? They bring that white Christmas home. And that's exactly what O.V. Brantley did with her quilt, Winter Wonderland Wanderlust, which was quilted by Maxine Moore and featured as part of the Tactile Architecture Exhibit at Houston International Quilt Festival 2024.
Using diverse design sources that include a Laundry Basket Quilt Winter Village pattern, trees by Kim McLean and peace angels by Starry Night Hollow, O.V. say of her quilt, "Winter is fleeting in Atlanta, Georgia so Winter Wonderland Wanderlust is an imagined winter day in my neighborhood. Houses, angels, stars, birds, and trees all enjoy the beauty of a snowy day." |

Thread Sketching with Bonnie Langenfeld |
|
|
|
Let Thread Sketching Accentuate Your Work
Bonnie Langenfeld stresses that thread sketching is key to adding realism to your work, particularly by paying attention to the direction of light. By adjusting thread color and value to reflect light and shadow, you can create depth and dimension in your designs.
After demonstrating how to set up your domestic machine, she shows how a free-motion zigzag stitch can be used to create details like the stem of a plant or to add texture, such as bricks, mortar, and cracks, giving a wall a truly authentic appearance.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: A Reinterpreted Railroad |
|

"French Market" by Sally Frey
Sally Frey loves to redesign modern quilts based on antique quilt patterns and designs. Her quilts become a blending of old and new that you'll love to see. For French Market, she was reinterpreting a turn-of-the-century quilt that featured a railroad crossing block. While she was busy sewing away making this style of block, Sally was trying to figure out what she was going to use to put a sashing in without really having the sashing look. When she placed the blocks up on the wall, unbeknownst to her, they created a secondary block design that she was happy with without using sashing.
See more of Sally's quilts* in How to Use Crayons and Embroidery in Your Quilts with Meg Hawkey | Update Classic Quilts.
*Sally's segment where her quilts are seen begins in Chapter 4. To begin viewing the show at this point, after the show starts click the box that says Chapter 4 on the righthand side of the player and you will be taken to Sally's part of the show. |
