Featured Quilt - First Place Pieced Wall at Road to California 2023

The Troubadour by Luz Seidensticker won First Place - Pieced Wall (Sponsored by BERNINA of America) at Road to California 2023. In addition to its First Place win at Road to California, The Troubadour also won Second Place - Wall Quilts: Movable Machine Quilted (Sponsored by Juki America, Inc) at AQS QuiltWeek - Paducah 2023 and was showcased at Houston International Quilt Festival 2022.

Based on an original design that utilizes the Mariner's Compass block, Luz drew on quilters of the past to influence her quilt. She says, "As an homage to quilters from the past, I modified the traditional Mariner's Compass block in an attempt to capture the magic of petals unfolding on giant mammoth sunflowers. In the background, a bluebird serenades his companion at the tune of "O Sole Mio." The quilt was completely machine piece."

Granddaughter's Spring Colorway

You've Watched Barbara's LIVE, Now It's Time to Start Month 9

For Month 9 of Laurel Ridge, the 2025 Block Of the Month designed by Lynn Wilder, you will be making 16 Nine Patch in a Star Blocks. You'll learn the formula and method for making quarter-square triangles, and you will also be reinforcing your skills for making half-square triangles and precision piecing.

There are two colorways for this year's BOM, Grandmother's Autumn and Granddaughter's Spring. If you purchased either of these kits, make sure to download the pattern that goes with the appropriate colorway as they do differ because of the fabrics being used. If you are using your own fabrics, we recommend that you download the patterns from the Grandmother's Autumn colorway to use as your guide.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Shifting "Gears" to a New Design

"Changing Gears" by Tina Craig

Changing Gears began with Tina fussy cutting some of the fabrics in her stash, with the intent to put a consistent yellow center in each one of the "flowers" she was designing. When she couldn't find a yellow fabric that she liked, she left the centers to be open. After leaving those centers open, Tina still didn't know how to proceed in making her quilt. So, she threw the "flowers" she had made on the floor and they landed in the pattern that is now seen on the quilt. Seeing the "flowers" from this perspective, Tina thought they now looked liked gears and she could now envision what the quilt would be. Each gear that is touching another gear was stitched using English Paper Piecing, with the all of the gears being appliquéd to the background. Changing Gears was featured in a two-page spread in Issue 25 of Quiltfolk magazine in 2023.
