Featured Quilt - You'll Go "Cuckoo" For This Quilt
Known for her inventive style of quilting that feature influences from Van Gogh, Gauguin, Gaudi, mexican folk art, pin-up art, and more, you never know what kind of quilt you're going to get from Alethea Ballard. One of her latest, recently featured at the 2024 Pacific International Quilt Festival, might actually drive you "cuckoo".
Cuckoo Time #3 is exactly the type of quilt you'd expect from Alethea, and comes with its own backstory too. She says, "Some awfully fierce birds have invaded the space of my cuckoo clock with their big beady eyes and their ominous agenda! Life is always like that, isn't it? You're going along, day by day, with your cuckoo clock ticking and chiming away. Then, a bird alights on it and brings a big ol' friend along. Well, just dang it! My cukoo is cuckooed AGAIN!"
If you love Alethea's work, see even more of it right here at The Quilt Show and learn from her by watching Collage Quilts with Alethea Ballard | Floor Canvases with Tami Pfeil. |

"Scroll Voluptuous" by Cara Gulati
Scroll Voluptuous is part of Cara's 3-D Explosion series of quilts. To achieve the 3-D effect in this quilt, which is the namesake scrolls surrounding the center design, Cara utilized the directionality of striped fabric to play with the eye's ability to distinguish the design, allowing the illusion of the 3-D scroll to be seen even though it isn't realistic. The second "Voluptuous" part of the title comes from the previously mentioned central designs and the voluptuous appliqué that Cara has used to quilt her quilt.
