Featured Quilt - First Place Balanced Piecing and Appliqué at Houston 2025

East Meets West by Molly Hamilton-McNally with Yange Gong won First Place - Balanced Piecing and Appliqué (Sponsord by BERNINA) at the Houston International Quilt Festival 2025. The quilt was the melding of two creative styles, featuring an original design inspired by two traditional paper piecing methods. "This quilt has an interesting and unusual background. It’s a unique collaboration and combination of the skills of two women, a Chinese student and her Chinese-American teacher. It shows the meeting of the East and West by incorporating the two traditional methods of paper piecing, the Western technique at the center of the quilt, and hand appliqué for the Eastern surrounding designs. The entire quilt is made of silk. Art unites the world."

Spark Your Creativity By Mixing Two Fields Together

Our brand new show features Alex discussing how she was inspired again by using a piece of abstractly painted fabric she created during a demo with Sherri Lipman McCauley. She cut the fabric into 18” squares and used them as the base for her project. To stay true to the original abstract design, she set guidelines for herself—focusing on the printed rings, adding embroidered squares, and using a limited color palette. She explains how to stabilize the fabric, draft and secure a stitched square grid, demonstrating lazy daisy stitches and sharing tips on choosing thread types.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: A Negative Space Portrait Quilt

"Malcolm X" by Lola Jenkins

Lola wanted to capture Malcolm X in a portrait due to his being so misunderstood. Thinking how she would create this in quilt, she realized she had never done a portrait in negative space. So she decided to see if she could portray Malcolm's essence using negative space. To accomplish this, she created the pieces of the portrait separately and then laid them on top of the black background.
