Featured Quilt - Going On the Defensive
Bisa Butler uses a variety of subjects for her portrait quilts, both recognizable and not. Today's quilt from her The World is Yours exhibit at the Jeffrey Deitch Gallery in New York City features the former and is of legendary basketball player Bill Russell. Based on a photograph of Bill by Nathaniel Butler via Getty Images, Bisa's The Secretary of Defense features Bill at a later stage in his life after achieving so much success. With several championship rings on each hand, his smiling face staring back at you in an array of technicolor
fabric, you can't help but appreciate Bisa's distinctive style and knack for bringing out the humanity and warmth in each of her quilt's stars.

"Diamond Delight" by Carol Doak
Diamond Delight features the Australia block from Carol's book, Mariner's Compass Stars. Having just come back from Baton Rouge, Carol was really hung up on the colors that she saw in the area, the purples, yellow, pinks, and more, and decided to use those as the basis of the color palette for this quilt. The name Diamond Delight comes from the fact that there is a whole block in the center and portions of a block around the outside that, when viewed together, form a diamond shape.
