It's Time for Tip and Technique 3

Each Monday and Wednesday we will have a new tip and technique for you. These are quick, a few-minutes-only lessons, that will help improve your quilting. There is also a blog to help you keep track of what you've learned. Here's what we have for you today.

What is Flannelette anyway?

Our tip today is from Libby Lehman
with The Straight Stitch (tip). She talks about using the straight stitch on your machine and also a bit about chain piecing. What stitch size does Libby recommend? It might not be what you think.

Featured Quilt - When The Light Comes Peaking Through

Lighted by the Blinds by Karen Bolan was featured in the MQG Quilts of the Month category at Quiltcon 2022. We think the title is a twist on the song Blinded by the Light, which may have played a part it in, but we think Karen's inspiration may have been more household in nature.

She writes, "Lighted by the Blinds was inspired by shapes and shadows formed when sunlight emerged between the window blinds in Karen's house. The design plays with color, scale, and shape while teaching piecing skills important in modern quilting, including working with large pieces, strip piecing, and using templates."

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Small Images Make a Big Impact
"Out of the Mouths of Babes" by Deborah Langsam

In Deborah Langsam's Out of the Mouths of Babes, "half-inch square images of notable women come together in this celebration of women’s wit and wisdom. From a distance, the viewer sees a set of purple or red lips. Up close, women’s faces emerge…from Abigail Adams to Annie Oakley, from Hillary Clinton to Judge Judy. The real tale, however, is told on the back of the quilt; it features a key to the photos and a quote from each of the “Babes” seen on the front."
