Featured Quilt - Second Place Wall Quilts Stationary Machine Quilted at AQS QuiltWeek Daytona Beach 2025

Gourds and Pumpkins by LeAnn J. Hileman is the perfect quilt to start off October and the Fall season ahead. While many think of pumpkins for jack o'lanterns and Halloween, they also perfectly encapsulate the autumnal season. LeAnn's quilt could be a Halloween quilt, or a Thanksgiving one, as it brings to mind cool Fall months with leaves falling and gathering the titular gourds and pumpkins for a Thanksgiving celebration. Last year, Gourds and Pumpkins won First Place - Small Wall Quilts: Pictorial (Sponsored by PFAFF) at AQS QuiltWeek – Paducah 2024. This year, it received Second Place - Wall Quilts – Stationary Machine Quilted at AQS QuiltWeek – Daytona Beach 2025 and an Honorable Mention in the same category at AQS QuiltWeek - Branson 2025.

Inspired by a family photograph, LeAnn used hand appliqué, raw edge appliqué, collage, and other tried and true quilting techniques to achieve the realistic look of the festive Fall foods she has on display.

Lynn Czaban Demonstrates Contour Quilting

Follow The "Road Map" To Navigate the Quilting Contours

In her quilt Memories that Remain, Lynn Czaban explains how she created realism using a variety of machine quilting techniques to emphasize the contours of the man's shirt, his beard, and the wrinkles on his face. Using tracing paper and high-resolution images, she is able to see—and trace—the minute details she calls “road maps,” which guide where curved and contoured quilting should be placed. She shares an example of samples using straight line quilting vs. contour quilting with remarkable differences.

Plaid Star Blocks Lead the Parade For Month 10

For Month 10 of Laurel Ridge, the 2025 Block Of the Month designed by Lynn Wilder, you will be making 8 Plaid Star Blocks. You will be reinforcing the formula and the method for making four flying geese at one time.

There are two colorways for this year's BOM, Grandmother's Autumn and Granddaughter's Spring. If you purchased either of these kits, make sure to download the pattern that goes with the appropriate colorway as they do differ because of the fabrics being used. If you are using your own fabrics, we recommend that you download the patterns from the Grandmother's Autumn colorway to use as your guide.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: A Beginner Bargello Quilt

"Jake's Wave" by Heidi Farmer

Heidi designed Jake's Wave for her nephew, and says that it is a super easy beginner bargello quilt. She created a pattern for it, and notes that it is an easy access point for quilters to get into bargello.
