Featured Quilt - Second Place Abstract at Houston 2025
Yesterday for our puzzle we feature a quilt that Jamie Kalvestran made during a workshop she took with Irene Roderick entitled Dancing with Irene - Lesson One. Today, we present to you a quilt from Irene herself that won an award last month at the Houston International Quilt Festival 2025. The quilt, Derse Verse, took home Second Place in the Abstract category (Sponsored by Quilters Select). Irene says of her work, "This piece is entirely improvisational. I intended to use the contemporary fabrics that are being designed by artists and showcase them while making them part of my own art. I feel that sometimes the fabric
designers are not given enough credit for the outstanding art they make for quilters."

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Braving The Storm
"La Tempete" by Michael James
La Tempete is from a group of strip pieced quilts that Michael made in the early 1980s. It was made at a point in his career, specifically 1983, where he was both piecing and quilting his quilts by machine. La Tempete, which translates in English to "the storm", features strips that are sewn as long lengths and then cut up, which can only really be pieced by machine.
See more of Michael's quilts in 2013 Quilt Legend Michael James.
