Featured Quilt - First Place Wall Quilts: Modern Quilts at AQS QuiltWeek Paducah 2025
Prickly Pear by Susan Braverman won First Place in the Wall Quilts: Modern Quilts category (Sponsored by by Statler by Gammill) at AQS QuiltWeek - Paducah 2025. This is not Susan's first award for this quilt, as it also received First Place in the Pieced category (Sponsored by TrueCut) at the 2023 Houston International Quilt Festival. This Modern marvel takes some quilting's time-honored designs and turns them on its head to create something new and exciting.
Susan says, "The familiar New York Beauty block gets an unexpected makeover with scale and vivid color. The blocks are all made from the same fabrics, but dense straight-line quilting with different thread colors provides a nuance of visual variation and definition. The graphic blocks bring to mind the colorful blooms, sharp spines, and round shapes of the prickly pear cactus." |

Find Out Why These "Littles" Are a BIG Deal
In our latest show, Karla Alexander shares how to construct 'littles' —miniature improv units (without paper piecing) that can be used to create small quilted items or act as filler in a larger quilt. Don’t miss the clever ruler guide tip using Post-it notes, and her technique for adding a 'bridge' to transition seamlessly from one fabric to another.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: How "Bazaar" |
|
|
|
"Bazaar Quilt" by Tara Faughnan
Utilizing folded fabric, Tara's Bazaar Quilt is an improv wonder. In order to make the quilt, Tara had to lay down a row and sew it, then the next, and work her way up the quilt. This means she had to imagine how the quilt was going to look before quilting each row, causing some patterns to go in and out as the quilt was made. When viewed in full, it's amazing to see how all the patterns come together.
