Featured Quilt - Second Place Large Quilts 1st Entry in an AQS Paducah Quilt Contest at AQS QuiltWeek Paducah 2026
A Year in Hand by Margaret Brockbank, and quilted by her daughter Maika Christensen, won Second Place - Large Quilts - 1st Entry in an AQS Paducah Quilt Contest at AQS QuiltWeek - Paducah 2026.
You may have seen Margaret's quilt before, as it was hanging in. the Pieced category at the Houston International Quilt Festival 2024. Now, it has won an award at Paducah, and this is certainly a quilt that deserves some recognition for just the time alone that went into making it. Margaret dedicated close to 2000 hours and a year of her life to complete her quilt, thereby earning its title, A Year in Hand.
She used the Mrs. Billings Coverlet pattern by Karen Styles, (Somerset Patchwork & Quilting, 2011) as her design source, which in turn was based off an Original quilt that was made in 1790 and is in the collection of the Quilters Guild of the British Isles.
Margaret says, "I have always enjoyed any type of handwork. I had previously done English Paper Piecing but never on this large of a scale. All piecing was hand-sewn with some of the borders attached by machine. I chose to use a contemporary palette. It took a year to complete and approximately 2000 hours. My daughter, Maika, used her skills as a machine quilter to finish this enjoyable project."

The Quilt Show Puzzle: A Fun "Morning" Project |

"Morning Make 1" by Cheryl Arkison
Cheryl has a morning practice where first thing in the morning she gets up and sews. So she just began to make the blocks that would eventually become this quilt, the aptly titled Morning Make 1. She says, "What started as demo pieces in my Improv Curves class moved their way into the Morning Make pile. Morning Make is my practice of sewing for 10-30 minutes immediately upon waking. So these blocks were moved into rotation and I think I had the blocks and top done in less than a week of mornings. Deciding on a layout probably took longer!
